Whipple Free Library
New Boston, New Hampshire

A proposed 5,000 square foot town library. The building footprint is expandable to help address future needs of the town.

Energy and environment conscious design precepts have been used in shaping the structure. The building’s main entrance and facade have southern exposure for passive solar gain, daylighting, and the potential future roof application of active solar systems. For example a simple planning concept of southern exposure for the main entrance can help in keeping it not only bright and inviting but also serves to reduce the build-up of winter snow and ice for pedestrians accessing the library. An efficient building envelope design that may include structural insulated panels (SIPS) helps to not only save energy and reduce operating cost but also to reduce the building’s impact.

This is an attractive site that affords pleasant views and access to the banks of the Piscataquog River and its growing network of walking trails. The main reading areas visually and physically open towards these amenities.
