Mercer Hall
Colby-Sawyer College
New London, New Hampshire

This project involved substantial renovation and several small additions to an austere 1950’s gym and classroom structure. Mercer Hall houses the Exercise and Sports Science Program.

A key component of the project is its three story “campus connector” located along the building’s south wall. This space had multiple design objectives; take advantage of southern exposure and views; passively heat the space in the winter via solar gain; provide handicap access to three levels of the existing building; create a tempered pedestrian environment for student travel between the upper and lower campus levels; create a space suitable for a three story climbing wall.

The cascading stair through the space and its multiple platforms afford views to the exterior and observation of the climbing wall activities.

The building in general was renovated and modernized. This included construction of new toilet rooms, classrooms, offices and building envelope upgrades.
